Los Angeles, CA - October 31, 2007 - Digital Vision, the premier supplier of grading and picture enhancement systems for film and television post-production announced that The Post Group recently used its Film Master DI/grading system on the 2007 "Thanks and Giving" PSAs – the annual fundraising campaign for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital founded by legendary entertainer Danny Thomas.
By utilizing the same digital color grade on versions of the PSA mastered for both HD broadcast and 2k theatrical, The Post Group was able to keep the spots looking consistent across venues and eliminate the need to conduct a second grading session, saving the client's time and budget.
This is the second year that The Post Group has handled the finishing of the "Thanks and Giving" PSAs for client RB Davies Productions. "Last year we took the DI output and did a separate grading session for the HD master," said Paul Westerbeck, The Post Group's Director of Telecine and the colorist on the PSAs. "This year we have Film Master at both The Post Group and our DI facility iO Film, so we could do the grade once and just move the project from the video color correction suite to the DI theatre."
The spots (a 30-second version and two 60-second versions) were shot on film, scanned at 2k and conformed in the Film Master by iO Film, who then made the project and media, along with the look-up table (LUT) for their grading theatre, available on the companies' shared SAN. Westerbeck accessed the project at The Post Group, performed the grade for the HD master for director approval, then applied iO Film's LUT. iO Film colorist Adam Hawkey screened the spots back in the 2k grading theatre for final tweaking and approval. "The director just walked from here to there and saw the exact same grade in 2k without having to go through another session," Westerback said.
"Both Richard Davies, our client, and Tony Thomas, St. Jude's Director, were really pleased with the quality of the work and the ease of the process," said Post Group VP of Longform Services, Mike Levy. "We envision doing a lot more of this to eliminate re-work in the grading process for projects that start in 2k and are down-rezzed for video or vice-versa."
Digital Vision President and COO Simon Cuff noted, "The Post Group is using Film Master in a way that not only gives their clients creative flexibility, but also makes best use of their budget—which is fantastic for PSAs and other projects where every dollar counts."
