The Importance of the film scanner

It is a common misperception that all scans are created equal. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Many facilities that offer digital intermediate services actually use telecine-based devices, such as the Spirit, for their film scanning. Telecine-based scanning devices are traditionally not pin-registered, and will jump across edits. These systems are also only capable of resolving an HD resolution image, and can only create a 2K image through scaling.

Additionally, since most telecine-based scanners are linear 10-bit, 4:2:2 native devices, the scans are not created as full color, full bandwidth images. iO Filmıs scanner provides eight times more color information than telecine-based scanners, and the amount of color information is directly related to the quality of color correction that is possible. Simply put, scans that are made on a telecine-based scanner will have extremely limited range during the color correction process. This is why iO Film only uses scanners that capture the full dynamic range of the film negative.
